Edmonds and Coles Scholarships

The Merchant Venturers provide administrative support to the Edmonds and Coles Scholarships Charity. This is an education charity which provides grants and scholarships to young people. Its origins can be traced to a trust set up in 1623 by Anthony Edmonds, a Bristol Merchant and land owner.

Eligibility Criteria

The charity makes financial awards, usually between £100 and £1,000 for any educational purpose approved by the charity’s governors. These may include small grants for the purchase of books or equipment needed for a course of education or training, or help with travel costs.

Awards are not normally made to enable a child to enter private education. Help may, however, be given in respect of pupils already in private education when there has been a change in financial circumstances through, for example, death of a parent, divorce or unemployment, and there are good reasons for avoiding disruption of a child’s education.

In order to qualify, a candidate has to be under the age of 25, to live in the designated area of benefit * and to be in financial need.
