The Society of Merchant Venturers

Youth

The Merchant Venturers Youth Committee considers innovative ways in which the Society could support young people in Bristol - particularly in partnership with others so that the Society’s funds might encourage donations from elsewhere to make a more significant impact. Some examples of recent initiatives are:

  • In collaboration with the University of the West of England the Merchant Venturers are examining how best they can contribute to improving entrepreneurial activity and support for young entrepreneurs.
  • A three-year project, working with Bristol City Council, to encourage and support youth clubs to accredit the achievements of young people, particularly those who may have no formal qualifications. The work is managed by Young Bristol, a well-respected organisation running youth activities in Bristol. Young Bristol has, itself, also been awarded a substantial grant.
  • Support for Young Enterprise in Bristol`s state schools. Young Enterprise organises and supports school pupils, in teams, to form and manage a small business, building their understanding of business and their team-working skills.
  • The Amana Educational Trust has received a significant grant to enable them to work with and improve the achievement of children from the Somali community.
  • The Society has contributed to the fund-raising of several of the schools in Bristol who have been seeking special status.
