Alastair Currie has worked in the live events and hospitality sector for the past 40 years. He currently runs four businesses that provide a number of goods and services, including event management and design, event catering, structures, staging, and sound and lighting for live events, touring and theatre.
Having left school aged sixteen with no qualifications and not knowing what he wanted to do, Alastair enlisted on a youth training scheme working for a marquee hire business; this was a life-changing opportunity for him as he loved working in the live events sector, so much so he set up his own marquee hire business aged nineteen. This opportunity came from his experiences on the youth training scheme, which gave him a valuable insight into the events industry. Alastair is now very involved in the training and development of young people within his organisations, as well as promoting opportunities for young people from diverse and challenging backgrounds across Bristol. As Alastair’s businesses emerge out of the pandemic, he is determined that his companies all adopt the National TOMs (Themes, Outcomes and Measures) Framework around social value, how the businesses employ and train young people, and the benefits of a circular economy. Sustainability is also very high on Alastair’s agenda, primarily ensuring the businesses look at all their local sourcing, travel arrangements, energy usage and packaging.
Alastair has always been interested in education and has over the years served on a number of school governing bodies in both the state and private sectors. Within SMV Alastair has served on the Montpelier High School governing body and is currently a governor at Collegiate School.
Alastair is married and has three daughters, one of which has recently joined his event lighting company as their sustainability and social value manager.
