Cullum McAlpine

Member since 1995

Cullum McAlpine is a fourth-generation building and civil engineering contractor, having spent his career in the family construction business of Sir Robert McAlpine, which was established in 1869 in Glasgow. His schooldays were spent in Scotland, where, aged 18, he started working to learn the requisite construction and property skills, before moving to the Bristol area in 1973 to manage the company’s local activities.

In addition to his construction background, Cullum has overseen the growth of RES Ltd from a small wind farm developer into the world’s largest independent renewable energy provider, now employing over 2000 people in 11 countries.

Cullum was Master of the Society in 2016/17 and is currently a member of the Estates Committee, where his understanding of the built environment is put to good use serving the health care and property needs of the St Monica Trust. He is also a member of the Charity Committee. Away from his SMV responsibilities, he chairs the Robert McAlpine Foundation, a charity whose aims are to assist youth and education, help tackle social inequality, and fund specialist medical research.

He lives in South Gloucestershire with his wife Amanda, and they have four adult sons.
