David Freed is the co-founder of Deeley Freed, an independent group of property companies based in Bristol that specialises in mixed-use regeneration projects. Often developing brownfield city centre sites into homes, offices, retail and food stores, overall project success is measured not only financially, but by the positive impact on local communities.
For 16 years, David has been closely involved with The Park Community Centre in Knowle, Bristol, and he has been the Chair of Trustees since 2010. This important community hub has recently undergone extensive redevelopment to provide even more support and opportunities for local people.
After gaining a Law degree at the University of Nottingham, David qualified as a barrister in London before returning to Bristol where he practised as a solicitor and built up his working knowledge of commercial property.
Since joining SMV in 2008, David has applied his professional expertise to support many of the Society’s activities, including helping to secure and strengthen the property portfolio of the St Monica Trust. As the endowment trustee, SMV is responsible for underpinning the charity’s financial base, ensuring that the Trust can continue to provide care for over 5,000 older people.
David was Master of SMV in 2021/22 and during his tenure spearheaded the Society’s activities to focus on its social purpose objectives. He continues to be closely involved with the Society’s work with care homes, social enterprises and charities, working with a wide network of partners.
David returned as Master in July 2025 following the death of Robert Bourns.
