Gillian’s professional life has centred around helping organisations and their leaders to undergo transformational change. She moved to Bristol to join the Hay Group, where she became a Partner, and then went on to become a board director of Clerical Medical Investment Group. Gillian has since worked in a variety of public and private sector organisations, as well several charities.
A passionate believer in the value of education to transform lives, Gillian was Chair of the Board of Governors at UWE and Chair of the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education. She served on the board of Wessex Water, where, as well as her usual board responsibilities, she worked to ensure that the voices of customers and of customer organisations were taken into account in the company’s strategic planning process. Gillian had a particular interest in hard-to-reach and vulnerable customers and ensuring that their needs were understood and met.
Gillian was proud to serve as the Master in 2020-2021, where despite the Covid pandemic she developed relationships with a variety of community-based organisations. In addition, she worked with others to ensure that students within the Venturers Trust have access to high quality apprenticeships, internships and work experience opportunities. During this year she also initiated research with the University of Bristol to ensure the organisation has a much better understanding of its past. This work is on-going.
Gillian serves on the Venturers Trust Board and is a member of the Downs Committee. She has previously been a governor at Montpelier High School and was part of the team that steered the transition from an independent, selective school serving 300 students to an Academy which today is non-selective, serves almost 900 students and where fees are no longer required.
Gillian was born in the States, grew up in Scotland and Wales, and went to school in Birkenhead before attending the University of Liverpool.
Outside SMV, Gillian and her family are active supporters of a number of charities with a focus on disability.
