Sir James (Jay) Tidmarsh spent most of his working life in the manufacturing industry in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, for which he was awarded an MBE for services to export in 1989.

More recently, he has served as Pro Chancellor of the University of Bristol, Director of GWE Business West and Chairman of South West One.

Jay has a broad range of charitable and community interests. These include Bristol Benevolent Institution, Bristol Commonwealth Society, Fitzhandinge Society, Fortuna Charitable Trust, Merchant Navy Association, Royal Bath & West of England Society and Young Bristol, having been involved for over 57 years with youth-focussed projects in Bristol. He is also the Patron of The Britain Australia Society (South West) and a member of the Cook Society.

Jay was Lord Lieutenant of Bristol from 1996 to 2007, and was knighted by Her Majesty the Queen in 2008.
