Jonathan is a consultant orthopaedic knee surgeon working in Bristol since 1999. He is a co-founder of the Fortius Clinic, the largest orthopaedic and sports medicine group in the UK.
A graduate of the University of Bristol, his community and charity interests include the University of Bristol Campaign for Resource, St Peter’s Hospice and the Ancient Society of St Stephen’s Ringers. He is President of Young Bristol, which provides services to disadvantaged young people in the wider city of Bristol.
He successfully combined his medical training with a first-class rugby career, playing for Bristol and Bath rugby clubs. He played 33 times for England, winning two Five Nations grand slams and reaching the Rugby World Cup Final in 1991. In 1992 he was voted Rothmans Rugby Player of the Year. His sporting background gives him an invaluable insight into the pressures faced by top class sportsmen and women when they suffer injury.
Jonathan now sits on the Board of the Rugby Football Union and is the representative to World Rugby on their behalf. His medical background is helpful in the key area of player welfare and concussion management. He was recently voted onto the Executive Committee of World Rugby, helping to set policy and direction for the game.
He is married to Amanda and they have four children and three granddaughters. His hobbies include golf, gardening and walking.
