Nick Lee

“There’s a strong sense of pride in Bristol on both sides of my family. My parents were born and raised here, as were their families, so my connection with the city goes back several generations. My grandparents on my father’s side came to Bristol as part of the Windrush generation - my grandfather worked on the railways and my grandmother was a nurse in South Bristol.

“It’s a city with tremendous energy, diversity and economic potential, but also one where significant inequalities remain and I’m determined to play some part in helping address that issue.”

Nick’s commitment to creating opportunities for others reflects an experience that shaped his own career: “At 19, a business took a chance on me professionally and it changed the direction of my life. I have never forgotten what it meant to have someone recognise my potential before I had a track record to prove it.”

That experience continues to influence the way Nick recruits, mentors and supports others. He is particularly committed to helping young people recognise possibilities beyond those immediately visible to them.

“I try to use whatever experience, connections or influence I have to create opportunities for people who may not otherwise receive them. Helping someone see what might be possible can be incredibly powerful. If that person goes on to create opportunities for others, the impact continues to grow.”

This belief in collective impact was central to Nick’s decision to become a member of SMV: “I’m a strong supporter of SMV’s work to convene people who might not otherwise meet, bringing different perspectives into the same room and helping turn conversations into action. Members bring experience from business, education, charitable organisations, public service and many other fields. The real value comes when those networks and skills are brought together around a shared challenge.

“Ultimately, I believe success is not only about what you achieve personally; it’s about what continues because you were there.”
