Think Bristol, Think Downs!

The energetic and dedicated team at the Avon Gorge and Downs Wildlife Project are as busy as ever, helping to protect and preserve this precious green space and arranging a host of activities for visitors to participate in.

The team will be taking part in the Forwards Festival this weekend, Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th August, with a stall located in the ‘Family and Kids Zone’ on Durdham Down. If you’re visiting between 12.30pm and 5.30pm, families can join a range of activities including making mindful mandalas and weaving wool stars.

If you would prefer to join a discovery session exploring the beautiful Leigh Woods side of the Avon Gorge, you can book a place on this special ramble activity, led by a knowledgeable Ranger, taking place on Friday 22nd August 10am-12pm.

Or maybe bats are more your thing. In which case, you can book a place on a special ‘World of Bats’ talk and exploration on Wednesday 3rd September 7-9pm taking place on Clifton Down and at the Conservation Centre. Dr Luke Romaine will introduce the amazing world of bats with an engaging talk followed by a twilight bat walk using detectors and thermal imagers to uncover the secret night lives of these fascinating creatures. Suitable for adults and children aged 12+, booking is essential.

For more family fun on Ladies Mile, another ‘Your Living Downs’ event will be held on Sunday 14th September between 10am and 3pm, with the road closed to cars during the day. This free community celebration includes family cycling and traditional games, nature activities and Goat Gully walks. Everyone is welcome and there is no need to book.

Finally, please support the ‘Love Your Living Downs Campaign’ which seeks to protect and preserve the Downs. Everyone can do their part by:

  • Taking your litter home
  • Respecting nature and wildlife
  • No fires or BBQs

Every action helps keep this green, open, shared space thriving – for people, and for the rare species that call it home.
