Summer Party at Katherine & Griffiths House

Katherine & Griffiths House was once again filled with laughter and good company this month as residents, families, friends, staff and local neighbours came together for the annual Summer Party.

Among the many highlights in the award-winning care home’s busy activities calendar, the Summer Party is always near the top of the list.

Led by Manager Leanne Thorne, with the support of her Deputy Sue Thorne and Wellbeing Co-ordinator Sabina Green, and with the whole staff team pulling out all the stops, this year’s party certainly did not disappoint.

Following the theme ‘Vintage Seaside Summer Party’, residents and guests enjoyed a packed programme of fun and entertainment, including lively music from the Port of Bristol Shanty Crew; a jaw-dropping aerial performance with ribbons from performer Becky Power; plenty of dancing; and a special programme of activities for children.

Younger guests enjoyed feeding the visiting animals – a goat, a donkey, a miniature Shetland pony, rabbits and guinea pigs – as well as playing water games and having their faces painted.

To top it all off, Head Chef Nick and his talented team prepared an extensive buffet lunch that was not only delicious but seemed to go on forever!

Among the guests, representing the Society of Merchant Venturers (SMV), were Jonathon and Melinda Baker, who thoroughly enjoyed spending time with residents, families and staff. Both rolled up their sleeves to offer a helping hand over lunch, making sure that no resident had an empty plate or glass.

The party also provided a wonderful opportunity to strengthen connections with the local community. Neighbours joined the celebrations, including a recently arrived local couple who were particularly touched to discover the connection between the charity and the gentleman’s late mother, who had been cared for by the Cote Charity many years ago. They enjoyed the afternoon so much that they are hoping to return for a coffee morning next month.

The generosity of local businesses also helped make the event a success, with a number donating prizes for the raffle. Together with other fundraising on the day, the event has so far raised just under £900 for the charity.

Feedback from residents and families has once again been overwhelmingly positive, reminding everyone that the value of these events extends well beyond the fundraising. They create opportunities for residents to spend precious time with loved ones, and for staff, families and the wider community to share in the life of the care home. It is this strong sense of community and belonging that is such an important part of what makes Katherine & Griffiths House an award-winning care home and a joyful place to live.

SMV is the trustee of the Cote Charity, and this year’s Master, Jonathon Baker, said: “The happiness that radiates from Katherine & Griffiths House is simply wonderful. Melinda and I were thrilled to be part of the Summer Party again this year and I would like to thank everyone who helped organise and support the event, in particular Leanne and her incredible team, and also everyone who came along and made the afternoon so enjoyable.”
