More than 30 members of Black South West Network (BSWN) and SMV gathered at Merchants’ Hall this week for the latest Mentoring Mingle, an event designed to strengthen connections, share learning and celebrate the impact of mentoring relationships.
Part of BSWN’s mentoring programme, which is delivered in partnership with SMV, the event brought together current mentors and mentees, alongside members of SMV interested in getting involved in future rounds.
Launched in 2023 and now in its third round, the mentoring programme matches early-stage entrepreneurs with experienced and successful business leaders. Its aim is clear and purposeful: to help dismantle the structural barriers that prevent Black and Racially Minoritised entrepreneurs from having equal access to social capital, skills and high-level business knowledge.
During the evening, mentors and mentees shared honest and inspiring reflections on what these relationships can achieve. Stories ranged from the simple but powerful benefit of having a trusted person to talk challenges through with, to more tangible outcomes such as unlocking funding opportunities and supporting business growth.

Reflecting on the evening, SMV’s CEO Caroline Duckworth DL said: “What stood out was the openness in the room and the genuine commitment on all sides to learn from one another. These mentoring relationships are not about having all the answers, but creating the trust, confidence and connections that help entrepreneurs move forward.”

The Mentoring Mingle was an uplifting and energising evening, highlighting the value of collaboration, shared learning and a collective commitment to supporting entrepreneurs of all backgrounds to build strong, sustainable and growing businesses.
