Spring has arrived on the Downs!

The dedicated team at the Avon Gorge and Downs Wildlife Project have been busy preparing for Spring and are looking forward to welcoming more and more visitors to the Downs as the weather improves…

The special pre-schoolers nature club starts this week; the first of an exciting series of ‘discovery walks’ has already taken place; and spots on the ‘dawn chorus spectacular’ discovery walk in April, with a hot breakfast included, are going fast!

The wonderful Spring sunshine has been accompanied by a whole range of songbirds, and the grazing goats have enjoyed sunbathing in the Gorge.

If you’d like to see a spectacular crocus carpet, take a stroll in the Granny Downs section of Durdham Down (near Westbury Park). Crocuses provide excellent nectar sources for early pollinators such as bumblebees and mining bees.

On Clifton Down you’ll be able to hear and spot many different bird species including greenfinch, goldcrest, firecrest, woodpeckers and dunnock. Then head over to Peregrine Watch point where you might be able to spot the male and female peregrines flying and calling as they court throughout March.
